Springy and holding more water, this lettering brush can be used to good effect in brush drawing.

Brush is an essential tool in Eastern art. Made from animal hair, such as fox, hare, sable and goat hair, these brushes are soft but springy. Sensitive to even a slight pressure, they are difficult to control and practice is necessary. There are about three hundred brush varieties and more than five hundred of brand names. This huge variety is largely responsible for their varied uses in art. A new brush comes with its pointed tip glued in most cases. Steep the tip in cool water until the glue is dissolved completely before the first use. Wash the tip clean after each use. Blot it on a strip of rice paper and let it air-dry. A carefully treated brush can last for many years.
