When young Sima Xiangru, a scholar of the 1st century BC, saw the carriages of the riches swaggered through the streets, he inscribed on a bridge post that he would not pass the bridge again if not riding a carriage by a team of four horses.

In 1914, ink made by a eleventh-generation descendent of Cao Sugong were shown at Tokyo Exposition and was awarded a gold medal. In the same year a Japanese painter-calligrapher Tomioka Tessai asked the shop to had his stick made for order.

The traditional brush drawing medium is ink in stick form. The pigment is derived from burning tungoil or pinewood in earthenware. The soot is collected, mixed with glue, perfumed, and then formed in varied shapes through wooden moulds. The colors of ink produced from sticks range from pure black to brown black. Comparing to bottled ready-to-use inks, hand-rubbed inks give richer and finer tones. A well treated ink stick can last for long time for moderate uses. Wipe it clean with a strip of rice paper and let it air dry after each use. A high-grade ink stick comes with a glass box or a brocade silk box which can prevent it from accident. Always store the sticks in a dry place and avoid direct sunlight and draft.
